Yes, You Can Elope and Still Have a Reception

Somewhere along the way, eloping got confused with missing out. A registry office, a quick signature, dinner at whatever restaurant had a table. It does not have to be that.

An elopement with a reception means you marry with only the people who matter, then sit down to a real dinner, cooked by a private chef, at one long table set just for you. No two hundred guests, no venue changeover, no compromise on the part of the day everyone actually remembers.

Here is how it works, from the paperwork to the last candle.

The Legalities: What You Actually Need to Elope in Queensland

This is the part couples worry about most, and it is simpler than you think.

How many witnesses do you need? Two. Australian law requires two witnesses aged 18 or over at your ceremony. If you are eloping just the two of you, your photographer and coordinator can legally act as your witnesses, so you never need to recruit strangers or tell anyone before you are ready.

The paperwork. You lodge a Notice of Intended Marriage (NOIM) with your celebrant at least one month before your ceremony, and no more than 18 months out. You will need official identification, such as your birth certificate or passport, and evidence of how any previous marriage ended, if that applies. Your celebrant walks you through every form, checks everything is in order, and handles the legal registration after you marry.

What we handle. At The Singing Heart Estate, your marriage celebrant is included in every package. The ceremony, the legals, the registration, all coordinated for you. Your job is to lodge the NOIM on time and bring your ID. That is genuinely it.

What "Just Show Up" Actually Means

All-inclusive gets thrown around a lot. Here is what it means on our estate, plainly.

The flow of your day. You arrive in the morning and settle into the getting ready suite, window light and quiet. Early afternoon, your ceremony, wherever on the estate speaks to you, the gardens, the olive trees, the French doors. Golden hour belongs to photography and champagne. Then, as the light turns, you sit down at one long table to a private chef dinner cooked only for you. Seven hours, one place, no next booking behind you.

What is provided:

  • Exclusive use of the estate, one celebration a day
  • Getting ready suite onsite
  • Ceremony setting, set up and styled
  • Marriage celebrant for your ceremony and legals
  • Ceremony flowers, bouquet and buttonhole
  • Two hours of professional photography
  • Private chef dinner at one long table, styled by the estate
  • Planning sessions and on-the-day coordination

What you bring. Your outfits, your marriage paperwork, your cake and drinks if you would like them, and yourselves. There is no corkage, so the wine you actually love goes on the table.

The Dinner Is the Point

A courthouse elopement ends with lunch somewhere. This ends differently.

The Long Table, our private chef dinner for up to ten, is the heart of the day. Your menu is created for you at your planning session, built around what you love to eat, your dietary needs, the season. Course by course, served as the candles come up, at one long table in the gardens or before the French doors.

For two, it is a candlelit dinner that no restaurant can give you, because the entire estate is yours and nobody else is dining tonight. For ten, it is the dinner party of your lives, your closest people, one table, a chef cooking metres away, and no clock on the evening.

Drinks are yours to choose. Bring the champagne you toasted your engagement with, the wine from your first trip together. We chill it, pour it, and never charge you for the privilege.

Why a Private Estate Changes the Day

You could elope in a park, on a beach, in a registry office. Plenty of couples do, and the photos are lovely. What those places cannot give you is privacy, and privacy is what makes an elopement feel like yours.

The Singing Heart Estate is a French provincial estate on 7.5 private acres in the Sunshine Coast hinterland, 15 minutes from the beach. We host one celebration a day. When the gates close behind you, every corner of the estate is yours, the gardens, the olive grove, the facade, the light. No permits to research, no public walking through your ceremony, no pack-down deadline.

Your photographer has seven hours and 7.5 acres. Your celebrant is booked. Your table is set. You did not coordinate any of it.

And if you would rather not leave, add the night. Stay onsite as a couple and wake up where you married.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you have a reception at an elopement? Yes. An elopement is defined by its size, not the absence of a celebration. Our packages include a private chef dinner at one long table for up to ten guests.

How many guests can you have and still call it an elopement? There is no legal number. Most elopements are between two and ten people, which is exactly the format we host.

Do we need to bring our own witnesses? No. If it is just the two of you, your photographer and coordinator can legally act as your witnesses.

How far in advance do we need to book? Legally, your Notice of Intended Marriage must be lodged at least one month before your ceremony. Practically, weekends book ahead, so reach out with your preferred season and we will send current availability.

Can we bring our own alcohol? Yes, BYO drinks and cake are welcome, with no corkage.

Is a weekday elopement cheaper? Midweek dates, Monday to Thursday, are $400 less than weekend pricing. Full pricing is on our packages page.
